Well, it has been an interesting week for Doctor Who broadcasting.

A trailer for the new series aired as promised last Saturday on BBC One and
HD. This trailer mentioned Doctor Who's premiere at Easter. The same trailer
was on BBC America's website, with the word Easter replaced by Spring.

The trailer then caused controversy when a version of it aired on Sunday
which said the premiere was Saturday 3 April (no start time). Normally, when
a TV station lists the day that a show will air, this is confirmation of the
air date for the show. Ah, but it seems that version of the trailer aired by
accident. The BBC has officially *not* confirmed the airdate. Doctor Who is
still up in the air - ITV can't schedule against us, we win, ha ha ha. That
said, the 3rd of April is the only Saturday of the Easter weekend, and your
range for Easter dates is pretty much Good Friday 2 April to Easter Monday 5
April. Eventually things will be confirmed.

The mention of Spring instead of Easter brought dread to Americans, fearful
that BBC America would give up on airing episodes right with the UK (The End
Of Time Part One and Part Two were 1 day behind the UK) and slack again.
Especially since BBC America insisted that the show Survivors would air all
12 episodes in order in the Saturday 9PM Eastern slot (the most likely slot
for Doctor Who). Well, BBC America has given us a date now - Saturday 17
April. And since BBC One won't commit to an airdate yet, we can't even say
for sure if there is a delay between the UK and the US - though probably
there will be a 2 week wait if the 3 April date for the UK is correct. No
timeslot for Doctor Who yet.

SPACE mentioned on their podcast for 23 February that they needed to wait for the BBC to schedule Doctor Who for SPACE to schedule, but SPACE would be "soon after" the BBC, and hoped to have Doctor Who on Saturday night. SPACE managed to air 3 of the specials on the same weekends as BBC America, so most people will assume that SPACE will also start the new episodes on 17 April. However, we have no confirmation.

Not a peep from ABC in Australia or Prime in New Zealand. In previous years,
these networks have started airing the full series anywhere from May to July
based on the best time with their schedules.

I plan to put out my thoughts on how the schedules are turning out in the
next few days, after I've had more time to evaluate all of this. Many will
remember my missive last year about the problems with Doctor Who
broadcasting. My first point (and the only one that anyone paid any
attention to) was the belief in simultaneous broadcasting around the world.
We wound up with a podcasting summit on the issue, and indeed many of those
podcasters are going over the topic this weekend at the Gallifrey
convention - hello guys, sorry I'm not there. But the other issues, some of
which would help to mitigate the problems of episodes NOT airing
simultaneously - they could bear with repeating. So, look for my thoughts
during the week as a separate note.

In other premiere news:

SciFi Channel Spain will be the first broadcaster I know of to air the last 3 Doctor Who specials dubbed in a local language. (The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead have aired dubbed in France and the Netherlands.) SciFi Channel Spain is currently airing the 2008 episodes (along with repeats of the earlier Eccleston/Tennant episodes). For the last 3 weeks of March, they will double up episodes: Journey's End (a 45 minute hacked up version) and 2008 Christmas episode The Next Doctor (a 45 minute hacked up version) on 15 March. Planet of the Dead (apparently uncut) and The Waters of Mars (apparently uncut) on 22 March. The End of Time (both episodes, apparently uncut, though part 2 will have to be commercial free with that time slot) on 29 March.

BBC Entertainment Scandanavia and BBC Entertainment South Africa will start
airing Doctor Who Series 30 in early April. BBCE SA will air Voyage Of The
Damned on Sunday 4 April, BBCE Scanadnavia will follow on Monday 5 April,
with both stations airing new episodes on Sundays thereafter, with exact
times in the listings.

In keeping with new showrunner Stephen Moffat's view that the new episodes
are the 31st Series of Doctor Who, TWIDW has been renumbering everything to
be consistent. I am tweaking my efforts. Now in the listings episodes will
go S (for Series or Season - I'm not getting into that argument) followed by
the number from 1 (for the first Hartnell episodes) to 31 (for this year of
Matt Smith). Then there will be Ep (for episode), followed by the number it
was in the season or series.

If you are a fan of Doctor Who on PBS then check out the PBS section - it
looks like at least 5 stations are actually trusting Doctor Who with pledge
nights in March where fans can show their support. Doctor Who has been
handled like a burden for PBS stations instead of a blessing for a long
time, so this is slightly encouraging.

that section back in a week or two when I might be able to keep track of
them again.
